We are family(Final) by grace&lin&yiling

er...Definitely needing improvement. Some frames are too short or too long.
And we'd like to make a video of flowing road surface as the background.
It took more than 2 hours to upload the file...it's too big...

Ollie Clarke, Paradise City

Hey guys, the videos look great! My song is Paradise City by Guns n' Roses. Below is a couple of pictures to give you an idea of what i am trying to achieve.

The song has a simple yet churning riff. I am going to try and mimic the flow and gritty sound of the song by alternating between clean and distressed type. All the words will consist of three layers directly on top of one another. The top layer being super clean, the bottom being really torn and ripped. In Adobe Aftereffects i can circulate through these layers quickly and smoothly (hopefully).

I'll Be Your Mirror - Nico and The Velvet Underground

This isn't the idea that I wanted to go for. The idea I had planned to do totally fell through due to my lack of skill in using Flash. I had wanted to create a typographic piece looking like a kaleidoscope.

This video is a different idea that I had, that unfortunately I haven't had time to develop properly and I'm disappointed with how it has turned out. I also wanted to have the lyrics written in the mirror using condensation, however when I tried this it became very difficult to read... It is the first video I've made, and it's the best I could do with the amount of time I had after messing up my first idea.

'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds'

Ok, so here is my video for The Beatles 'Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds'.

I haven't prepare the video for the full length of the song, as it took me ages to finish this stop-motion animation and put it all together.
I decided to work in white only, although the song is so 'colorful'- I tried colors and it looked just messy, and now I think, it makes a more sophisticated background for the lyrics...

Let me know what you think!

The video itself is backing the actual lyrics and meanings that they used in the song, while color is playing the role of amplifying the whole nostalgic atmosphere of the music.
The idea is still the synchronization of the two but without losing the sense of freedom that the difference between the interaction of the sound with the image gives.
In order for that to be more obvious as well as to resemble in a more convincing way to a karaoke interface, text is placed.

Ruth Johnson Final Karaoke

Here is my final video for Sly and the Family Stone's 'Family Affair.'
The table setting scenario developed from the idea of family relationships and the dramas that occur between family members, as gathering together as a family tends to occur mainly at meal times.
The idea for symbolism with the hand movements and gestures came from sign language and makaton.
It doesn't quite work as a karaoke video.
I hope the sound works due to copyright issues.
Morrison's makes nice cream cakes!

All My Little Words

Admittedly this isn't the most creative karaoke video ever, but I've been very busy with a lot of other things and this is the best I could come up with!

The type is written in tea leaves, it's all stop motion, something I'm new to and now know how to do! This is a very low quality video as I'm incapable of uploading it onto YouTube or converting the file size just a little smaller..

The music was recorded with my flatmates and myself; credit to Joe Wardle and Jessica Townson. This was done to enable a "karaoke version" where there is no main vocals. I will upload both so you can see the difference.

All My Little Words KARAOKE VERSION

Florian Nitschke, O Superman

Here is the latest version of my karaoke video. I used original footage of the song but manipulated and rearranged it for a better flow in the video. I removed the singer completely to get a even more abstract look. The timing is still not the best, but at least the video is complete by now.

# belle & sebastian / I want the world to stop

I find this song quite romantic and since I am not in the most romantic period of my life for at least the last twenty years I find it really interesting working on it.
The idea behind that video is to synch the motion of the image with the audio but not in a perfect way, as well as to apply different colours for different parts of the song,
in order to create a small gap between the reaction of the image with the sound.
I initially thought not to include any text and play with the video according to the actual music by editing it.
I think I will stick to that plan.
(this is only a small sample)
Enjoy.

Velvet Underground "beginning to see the light"

Adam Donnelly: Rolling Stones- Get off my cloud

Hello, Sorry this is mega mega late.
I had trouble getting invited to this, along with other technical gremlins.

I plan to do my karaoke interface all typographic from stencils which will be spray painted. I tried to use after effect but was unable to achieve a desired effect, it all seemed to come out so generic.
This is something I done not so long ago, although not for this project I think it gives a general feel of something along the lines of in which I want to achieve.

Once spray painted I intend to photograph and put into sequence on flash.

At current I am mainly cutting out.

"KISS" idea#2

I'm not sure...
probably, this style is not suited to this song.
pencil shaving - just as experiment.

UB4O RED RED WINE

23.11.11
After the feedback... Here is the new version of my UB4O karaoke, I have added several versions using different contrasts/exposures and colours to see which is best fitting. I like the slight blur and distortion as I feel it adds to the mood of drink and heartbreak finding it hard focus. I also think the smudge of colours links with red wine and stains. linking to the heartbreak/alcohol abuse. Initially I wanted an aloof woman’s lips emotionless, however it has been fun exploring personality and shapes with lips, which adds a sort of encouragement to dance and enjoy the rhythm, as well as conveys the mix of emotions the singer feels. Feedback needed.

Chris Lacy Scatman

When I was listening some more to scatman it reminded me of people speaking in tongues, so for my video I want to make an edit with loads of different videos of people speaking in tongues and having religious experiences (as in the video above). I think this could work with the music. for when scatman is not scating and speaking in real words i want to use edits od religious figures giving sermons/preaching. As for the text this is something i havnt worked on just yet, but am looking at lots of evangalist promotional videos to get an idea of there conventions with text, so it might be running along the bottom all the while with some sort of gradient backdrop (the text will probably look quite purposely bad). I apologise for not having done more work.

This is just what the text is going to look like, I'm going to film a series of stop motion and real time film clips to go behind the text. the video below is a short example of what I mean. I'm planning to use a chalk board for this because its all about geometry so wanted it to be a bit like a maths lesson.

Here are some stills from an old sesame street episode about teaching shapes and words, which I want to recreate for some parts of the video.

(Sorry its late had MAJOR issues with rendering and upload!)

Thea: The Words That Maketh Murder

This is my first draft/ the early stages of my Karaoke video for PJ Harvey's 'The Words that Maketh Murder' I wanted to post it up in this state so you can get the general gist of my idea and how i'm going to further it.

The Album 'Let England Shake' is based around the notion of writing home from war like a modern day Siegfried Sassoon. So I want to incorporate a level of handwriting in to the film with some eery footage.

The verses are sung quite fast so its quite difficult to fit the text in in a legible way so that the film is functional as a karaoke film so this is something I intend to develop further.

JOY DIVISION. DIGITAL.

On my project I want to experiment with ink and water and kind of "floating the ink" to create some effects with it.
The whole clip will be in b&w to underline the kind of dark feeling of the song.
I don't want to use any digital type to create a contrast to the title "digital".
The attached Image shows an example for the look. But there will be different fonts used to seperate between the phrases and the meanings.
A small sclip will follow soon.

we are family by grace&lin&yiling

This is our first draft of this song. It is a animation, we do this by using the flash, so some key frame should be changed in order to catch up the rhythm.

The song describe the daily life of the girls that have very closed relationship like sisters, so we use a earth and the landscape on the earth to express that this is a journey and get together. They see the same world, same view and share the same feeling.

I would like to create an interactive video using Xboxs' Kinect sensor and open source programming available for it, imposing a basic alternate Kraftwerk identity over the singer.
I found this from a recent graduate of Brighton, who did this:

But mine will look more so like this:

George Michael

Hi guys,

Sorry I havent been able to finish the video, but here is my concept and some screen shots.

For George Michael's song, it has a lot of dirty lines like "Well I guess it would be nice
If I could touch your body." So for the music video i want to do a screen record of random conversation i can have and/or scripted conversations on msn or something, and interact with different online videos even background images. And play with the mac zoom in/out function.

Lucie - Harder, Better, Faster Stronger

Hi I have tried to covert my flash file to a .mov file but when I do this is comes out all jerky and some of the text movesout of it's place. I have tried to embed the swf file here but that dosen't work i used this code <embed src="http://www.swfme.com/view/1066452" quality="high" allowscriptaccess="always" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" align="middle" height="300" width="800"></embed>

So at the moment I can only post this link to my project.

Joy Division - Digital

Mine will be a combination of following

this is a VERY VERY first try...

ruth johnson karaoke first draft

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU8aET9gGeo

-this is my first draft for the song 'family affair' by sly and the family stone.
-there are two more meal scenes that appear later on.
-i tried to give the video a slight 70's feel.
-i understand that it doesn't quite work as a karaoke video seeing as i've replaced some words with actions and symbols.
-it is hard work directing parents!

"It's the end of the world as we know it" by Haibi & Stella

This song is very cheerful and the lyrics is just rhyme and saying nothing.that's why we add some funny elements by the movement of strawberries and subtitles.
We just combined gif animation and video clips to express the meaning of lyrics, and let them move together to emphasize the rhythm.

SWIMMING SONG

I have decided doing an animation about this song.
It will be like a little man walking with a changing background, and lyrics on the left side of the sceen (I have designed specic type for the song)
I have thought about that because my song is very visual. The singer is describing many ways to swim in different places.

here is the link of my song.

Shoop by Salt n Pepper. Estelle & Amie

Okay, so this is Shoop by Salt n Pepper. We were at war with Flash for a long time n couldn't do it but got some really funny outcomes !! So we decided to do it on iMovie... will be experimenting with Flash more this week & will post to the blog . Estelle & Amie x

Velvet Underground "beginning to see the light" by Berenike

The Velvet Underground was an American rock band formed in NY, First active from 1964 to 1973. Their best-known members were Lou Reed and John Cale, who both went on to find success as solo artists. Andy Warhol managed the Velvet Underground and it was the house band at his studio, the Factory, and his Exploding Plastic Inevitable events. The song "Begging to see the light" was on their third album "The Velvet Underground" and has been recorded in 1968.

I chose to combine some sequences from old video material reduced to black and white, showing their first gig at the Factory, with a colorful font that seems to be typed live into the video. I used 4 different softwares (AI, AE, iMovie & DawnArk).

An anthem for drug, free love and the embassis of the 68s.

"All My Little Words" by The Magnetic Fields

All My Little Words

No main vocals

I decided to record a cover of the original song so that I can freely take the main vocals out to make it more suitable for a karaoke video. This isn't a finished recording as it's still missing a cello piece and the vocals need refining. I've also been video recording the audio recording sessions which I hope to add to the final video, if I feel it is suitable.

As for the typography side of the project, it is still undergoing however I'm learning how to use After Effects from scratch so there is nothing worth seeing to put up. If it proves too difficult, I will be using stop motion animation.

Prince "KISS" by Olga

The "Kiss" song was written in '86, it was a hit at the time, style - funk.
I wanted to support the mood of this simple unpretentious songs. So I decided that it would be a simple video, built on the dynamics of words and colors.
I also want to maintain the rhythm.
I chose relatively simple way to create a video - it is stop motion. This is just the beginning of the project, I was not completely sure in the choice of font. I probably will change it all)
After I did the first few seconds I realized that I need to make all words more contrast in their size, to add more color and more dynamic.

Waiting for your feedbacks!

UB40 RED RED WINE

I'm having a hard time trying to come with a suitable concept for the song, I am considering now using wine bottles with the labels designed with lyrics on. I think this will be a nice way to capture each lyric and relate to the topic.

However my initial idea was using typography on the teeth. The reason for this is because red wine stains teeth, in a similar way to which the singers affection and heart break towards his lover is stained on him. The lips, I thought could convey the aloof female, as if, when the singer thinks of how he feels he imagines his lover having fun, unaware. I'm not sure if this is appropriate though, and it has given me a massive jaw ache after two words, I would appreciate some feedback on both ideas!

Lina Adamsson, Colours

Beats, bleeps and colours. There's a lot going on in this song and I'm toning it down a little. Through the dynamic relationship between the dark and the light the interface, and the actual lyrics, become the video and not only a part of it. It might look dark at first but when the colours actually do shine through they stand out clearly. Not seeing what surrounds the words also helps building up an expectation for what will come next. When using as little means as possible, every addition to the story will have an impact.

I'm using simple techniques to try and create some movement into the lyrics. The interface is done by hand and will be partly photographed, partly filmed for longer sequences, and you simply follow the light for direction. I've placed the words according to the notes in which they're sung, and divided some of the words into syllables. Hopefully that will make it a little easier to follow the melody if you've never heard the song before. (This might only be clear to me, but it's how I see music.)

As this is very much a work in progress I've only uploaded a few seconds. I know it's hard to comment on what you can't see, but try and imagine this as an image of sound expanding with colours and light the more we listen to it. At least that's what I'm aiming for.

L

Florian Nitschke, O Superman

The idea is an integrated interface which has the aesthetic of the original clip. It will be layered on top. The typography will display the lyrics depending on the content of the sequence. The words will be interacting with the person, objects, movements and colors in the video and reflecting the spirit of the song.

At this moment, I‘m working with the helvetica ce in the bold-style and some further animation-effects to create a 80‘s feeling. There will a base grid. It's just a first try, thanks.

Is this the real life…

Welcome to the Camberwell Karaoke blog. This blog will be used to review and celebrate the work produced by BA Graphic Design Second Years for their Karaoke project. Students have each been given a track and and have been asked to produce a functioning Karaoke interface for their song. Please use this space to comment constructively on the work on show, remembering that it is work in progress. Happy singing.
