Thea: The Words That Maketh Murder by PJ Harvey

http://youtu.be/kGv-MMSeiXs

This is my first draft/ the early stages of my Karaoke video for PJ Harvey's 'The Words that Maketh Murder' I wanted to post it up in this state so you can get the general gist of my idea and how im' going to further it.
The Album 'Let England Shake' is based around the notion of writing home from war like a modern day Siegfried Sassoon. So I want to incorporate a level of handwriting in to the film with some eery footage.
The verses are sung quite fast so its quite difficult to fit the text in in a legible way so that the film is functional as a karaoke film so this is something I intend to develop.

  2. I really like it especially the part someone is writing in a book and the part with the hands and the washing line.

  3. really well done, I like the handwritten & drawn imagery more than lets say the scrabble letters (although they are really cute). maybe make the maketh murder on the hands a bit more bold.. ?! x

  4. my favorite is the part with the hands!!! --- maybe use as many hands, you can find... and let them appear from different directions (when there is enough time) or with cuts in between.

When i saw the body I thought about writing the whole lyrics on one body and adding the words via stop motion...

    2 cool ideas!

  5. I don't know that it is, but I love that the sequence of "I've seen and done things I want to forget" is used again. Does anybody else has the same feeling about that? Amazing. Okay. Stay in the B&W-thing, use the shaking camera – all that makes it look like a very good independent work. And the scrabble letters are a good way to have contrast to the writing on the hands, stay with that. Feels like you found a good way to connect the visual thing and the song. The intro is very strong.

  6. looking fantastic so far, loving the idea. it's a very thea like idea. hands are a brilliant idea, only thing i'd like seeing improved is the timing i think? so that it works as a karaoke thing. maybe you could speed some of the video clips up (e.g. the first clip of the clapping) so it's in time with the song. looking forward to the finished product!!! nice song, also. :)

  7. I really like it, especially the writing on joes(?) back, the use of light and because its out of focus makes it quite eerie.

  8. Repeating a sentence with the same footage is a nice idea, it gives you direction and helps you understand how the song is built up and how to sing that part. I think that using different ways of displaying the lyrics, when done in this way, can be really intriguing. Love that it's in black and white, it balances everything up nicely.

  9. I really like the part of hands!!! Especially the beginning, two persons clap hands. That's look like a mirror reflecting one person's hand. I think using hands as an element in your karaoke is beautiful. Maybe you could use some shadows of the hands to make some letters and let them appear in your subtitles.

  10. I really like the way that write behind someone's back, the "longing to see"one and the hands one"a woman's face"!This feel like someone being mistreated, and somehow it shows the “Murder”.And "the soldiers fall like.."part,i like you use dominoes to show the soldiers' fall.It remind me the tiny soldier toes that my younger brother always played with when he was a little boy.But the clip just come out after the song, maybe you can adjust this.

  11. We don't like the still images. The writing on the back and the hands covering the face. Even if the sequence is still we think you should still film it in real time.

Some of the words are hard to read like the sequence on the washing line. And also you wouldn't hang paper on a washing line so it seems a bit odd.

The clapping hands is really nice. Maybe every shot should feature a hand.
